The ABC's of Skin Care

Let´s talk about Retinol, Vitamin C, and SPF

By our dear friend and Club Member Bianca Cortez. Owner of Skin Essentials by Bianca

When wanting to achieve healthy, radiant, and youthful skin; Retinol, Vitamin C, and SPF is all you need. Use them together in your skincare routine to protect, rejuvenate, and brighten the appearance of your skin.

RETINOL

Retinol is derived from vitamin A and can help prevent or reverse early signs of aging. Often sold over-the-counter in creams and lotions, retinol has amazing benefits not only is for its anti-aging properties; retinol helps accelerate cell turnover (helps shed off your dead skin), minimize acne, and hyperpigmentation.

Cell turnover is important because you do not want all your serums to be applied above all the dead skin cells.

Did you know that as babies our cell turnover is working at its max but as we start to age the process slows down by 28+ days?

Add retinol to your routine!

I like to tell my clients to start incorporating retinol slowly. Begin with days that start with “T” (Tuesdays, Thursdays) and make sure to use it at night before your moisturizer. This will allow for the skin to get use to the retinol without feeling dry, flaky, or sensitive.

VITAMIN C

Think of an apple: when you stop eating the apple the flesh starts to brown, wrinkle, dehydrate, well the same happens to us.. Luckily a lot slower!

Vitamin C is your brightening and protective agent with potent antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals and can also boost our collagen production helping with firmness and elasticity.

Keep in mind that it does not lighten hyperpigmentation.

Use your Vitamin C everyday in the morning right before applying your moisturizer and SPF. It is best to stick with stable forms of Vitamin C like L-Ascorbic Acid.

SPF, SPF, SPF

Sun Protection Factor!! I can not express that enough. No routine is complete without SPF and no, if you are a woman, your makeup’s SPF is not enough!

Did you know that sun exposure is the main cause of premature aging and skin cancer?

So incorporate the use of SPF, always choose a broad spectrum of 30 or higher, and re-apply every two hours even when indoors.

You can find sun protection in three forms: physical, chemical, and mineral. Combining this trio will help achieve a softer, glowy, and brighter complexion.
